Why is 27SiMn Recommended for Large Engineering Machinery Cylinders?


1. Why Choose 27SiMn material grade for Large Engineering Machinery Cylinder Tubes?


27SiMn is a medium-carbon low-alloy high-strength steel (C ≈ 0.27%, Si and Mn ≈ 1.2% each), specially designed for thick-walled, high-pressure, heavy-duty hydraulic components.

It has obvious advantages over 20#, ST52/E355, and 45# steels:


1. Excellent hardenability (the most critical feature)


◦ 27SiMn can be through-hardened even in thick sections, with uniform microstructure, strength, and hardness from the surface to the core, making it ideal for high-pressure thick-walled cylinders.


2. High strength, good toughness, and impact resistance


◦ After quenching and tempering: tensile strength ≥ 980 MPa, yield strength ≥ 835 MPa, which is 30%–50% higher than 45# steel.


◦ Excellent plasticity and impact toughness; resistant to shock loads, directional shocks, vibration, and not prone to brittle fracture.


3. High pressure resistance and anti-burst performance


◦ Dense structure and good integrity of seamless tubes; resistant to high pressure, creep, and expansion.


◦ Suitable for engineering machinery cylinders with 25–35 MPa or higher working pressure.


4. Good wear resistance and long fatigue life


◦ With silicon-manganese alloying and quenching & tempering, uniform hardness (HB 240–280) and good wear resistance are achieved.


◦ High fatigue strength; not easy to crack under repeated high-pressure cycles, with a service life 3–5 times that of ordinary carbon steel.


5. Good processability and cost-effective


◦ Suitable for deep-hole boring, roller burnishing, and honing; the inner wall can easily achieve high precision, low roughness, good sealing, and no leakage.


◦ Lower cost than Cr-Ni-Mo alloy steels.

It is the top choice for large engineering cylinders due to high strength, high toughness, uniform thick-wall performance, and low cost.

2. Why must 27SiMn be quenched and tempered (Q&T)?


Untreated 27SiMn = wasted material, poor performance, and high failure risk.


Quenching & Tempering:

920–930 °C water quenching + 450–550 °C tempering, forming a tempered sorbite microstructure.


Core benefits of quenching & tempering:


1. Optimal strength-toughness combination


◦ Quenching provides high hardness and strength but is brittle and prone to cracking.


◦ High-temperature tempering relieves internal stress, reduces brittleness, improves toughness, while retaining high strength.


◦ Result: high strength + high toughness, so the cylinder is both pressure-resistant and impact-resistant.


2. Uniform structure, stable performance and dimensional stability


◦ After Q&T, the microstructure, hardness, and strength are uniform across the entire section, avoiding “hard outside, soft inside”.


◦ Eliminates rolling and machining stresses; less deformation during subsequent machining, stable dimensions in service, and no leakage.


3. Improved fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance


◦ Tempered sorbite has much better fatigue resistance than normalized or hot-rolled structures; not prone to fatigue cracking under repeated high pressure.


◦ Moderate hardness (HB 240–280) ensures good wear resistance, no damage to seals, and long service life.


4. Uniform performance in thick walls (not achievable with 45#)


◦ 27SiMn with Q&T maintains full-section strengthening even at wall thicknesses of 30–50 mm.


◦ 45# steel has a soft core and poor toughness in thick sections, easily leading to expansion, cracking, leakage, and short service life under high pressure.
