Why is 42CrMo with Quenching & Tempering + Induction Hardening Recommended for Hydraulic Cylinder Piston Rods in Large Construction Machinery?
42CrMo is a medium-carbon chromium-molybdenum alloy structural steel, which is the standard mainstream material for piston rods in construction machinery worldwide.
1. Extremely high strength, tensile, bending and fracture resistance
◦ Tensile strength can reach over 1000 MPa, much higher than 45# steel.
◦ The piston rod will not bend, break or deform permanently during lifting, digging and impacting of large machinery.
2. Excellent hardenability
◦ Even for large-diameter and long piston rods (φ80, φ100, φ120 or larger)
◦ It can be through-hardened, with sufficient core strength and no “hard outside, soft inside”.
3. Good toughness, impact resistance and fatigue resistance
◦ Construction machinery undergoes frequent extension, retraction, heavy impact and strong vibration.
◦ 42CrMo has much better fatigue crack resistance than ordinary carbon steel.
4. High temperature resistance and anti-creep
◦ Oil temperature and rod temperature rise under heavy-duty continuous operation.
◦ 42CrMo maintains strength at high temperatures, no elongation or deformation.
Why is Quenching & Tempering Necessary?
Quenching & Tempering = Quenching + High-temperature Tempering.
It is the critical heat treatment to establish a high-performance core structure.
1. Optimal strength-toughness combination
◦ High strength, good toughness, low brittleness.
◦ No collapse, cracking or breaking under heavy impact loads.
2. Stress relief and dimensional stability
◦ No deformation or bending during machining and service.
◦ Ensures good straightness of long-stroke piston rods and prevents seal damage.
3. Prepares for subsequent induction hardening
◦ Only with a strong and tough core can the surface be hardened to a high level.
Why is Induction Hardening Also Required?
This is the most critical process for piston rods. Quenching & tempering alone is not sufficient.
1. Ultra-high surface hardness and excellent wear resistance
◦ Surface hardness can reach HRC 55–60.
◦ Wear-resistant, no scoring or grooves under sand, dust and mud conditions.
2. Hard surface layer + tough core = perfect structure
◦ Hard surface: excellent wear resistance.
◦ Tough core: high impact and bending resistance.
◦ This “hard outside, tough inside” structure is ideal for piston rods.
3. Minimal deformation and high precision
◦ Fast and localized heating.
◦ Small bending deformation, easy to ensure high dimensional accuracy.
4. Greatly improved fatigue life
◦ Compressive stress formed on the surface resists fatigue cracks.
◦ Service life is 3–5 times longer than rods with only quenching & tempering.
Final Advantages of 42CrMo with Quenching & Tempering + Induction Hardening
• High strength, bending resistance, fracture resistance and impact resistance
• Excellent wear resistance, no surface scoring
• Stable dimensions and good straightness
• Extra-long fatigue life, suitable for heavy-duty and high-frequency operation
• Uniform performance even for large-diameter and long piston rods
• The most reliable piston rod material for harsh working conditions in construction machinery
